Diamond clarity is the third key to buying a quality wedding ring. The more clarity a diamond has, the more precious and valuable it is.

But what is clarity in a diamond? What makes a diamond unclear?

Diamond is one of the hardest minerals on the earth. But despite its hardness, a diamond can have all sorts of scratches, trace minerals, and other impurities that reduce the clarity of the stone.

Your jeweler will call these defects “inclusions.”

The more inclusions a diamond has, the lower the value of the gem, so you want to buy a stone with as much clarity as you can afford.

The highest clarity rating is “flawless,” a term which you’ve probably heard in relationship with diamonds before. If you can’t afford a flawless diamond, you’ll want to get a diamond that is very, very slightly included. These inclusions won’t be visible with the naked eye and you’ll have a very good quality diamond.

If you really need to save money, you can get a lower clarity diamond, but don’t go lower than a slightly included diamond. This diamond will show quite a few inclusions at 10X magnification, and some will be visible with the naked eye, but you’ll still have a pretty good diamond clarity.

When choosing a diamond wedding ring, the color in the diamonds plays an important role. The Gemological Institute of America sets guidelines that the industry follows, and you might be surprised at what you find there.

Several different systems have been applied to grading the color of a diamond over the years. Some have used numbers and some have used letters. So, when the GIA decided to create a system for grading color in diamonds, they purposely started with the letter d and worked their way down to z.

It's important to note that if you’re choosing a diamond wedding ring, and you’re looking at diamond with a grade of d, you’re not looking at a diamond that is four notches down the color scale. You’re actually looking at the highest rating a diamond can have.

When discussing the 'color' in a diamond, it might be surprising to discover that the the ideal is to get a diamond that is completely COLORLESS. Color in a diamond actually gives a dingy look that interferes with the natural beauty of the diamond and how it’s able to reflect light.

Why Do Rings Discolor Fingers?

You may notice after wearing your rings for a year or two that you have blackening or discoloring of your skin. It's most likely not faulty manufacturing, as some people assume. This commonly occurs in white gold rings when your skin comes into contact with the alloys used in the white gold.

Most white gold rings are plated with rhodium, or a similar metal in the Platinum family of metals. This provides a bright white color and a layer of hypo-allergenic material in-between your finger and the alloys used in white gold that can cause discoloration. When the rhodium wears thin your skin has direct contact with these alloys and through many causes (perspiration, cosmetics, lotions, etc.), discoloration may occur. This usually takes place after a year or two depending on use and conditions. The easy and best solution is to re-plate your ring. Carat weight- is measured in size based on a 100 point scale, in other words a 1 carat diamond= 100points where as a 3/4 carat diamond=.75points. Carat weight is not the most important factor as it only measures the size, not the clarity, cut or color of a stone.

Cut- While quite a few people believe that the cut of a diamond refers to its shape, that is inaccurate. The cut of a diamond refers to how well the stone is cut, not its shape. If a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, it will not allow the true brilliance of the stone to come through. A poorly cut diamond, regardless of its shape, will not have the glitter or fire of one that is cut perfectly.

Color- The color of a diamond is determined only by nature, it has to do with the elements embedded within the stone. Color is measured on a scale of D-Z, with D, E and F considered colorless. The more colorless the stone the higher it's value. (Though there are rare stones that are pink, blue or green that are very rare and extremely valuable).

Clarity- A diamond will always have traces of natural elements in it, sometimes referred to as inclusions or birthmarks. Clarity is a measurement of the purity of each individual stone. Most inclusions cannot be seen by the naked eye, but a professional has the tools necessary to grade how pure the stone is.

Because wedding rings tend to be worn all of the time and over a number of years, it is important to know the difference between yellow and white gold or 10k and 14k. Gold has been a treasured element for centuries due to in part its luster and durability. A small amount of gold can be pounded into an extremely large area. On its own, gold is fairly easy to bend, dent or scratch, and it does not tarnish or stain skin. Pure or 100% gold is referred to as 24k gold. Though 24k gold is more expensive and luxurious, it is not recommended for a wedding ring because it is not durable enough for everyday wear.

Other metals are usually mixed with gold to make it stronger and less expensive.
